Wentworth woman accused of stealing from home

REIDSVILLE, N.C. — A Wentworth woman is accused of stealing property from a home in Reidsville. 

According to deputies, 38-year-old Laura Anne Lemons was arrested Friday in connection with a theft that was reported July 3 at a home on Durham’s Trail. 

Deputies said the items stolen from the home were recovered by detectives and returned to the owner. 

Lemons is charged with felony breaking-and-entering and obtaining property by false pretenses.  She was jailed under a $10,000 secured bond with a court appearance slated for Sept. 20.

Sheriff: Reidsville man stole pack of cigarettes, $50 in armed robbery

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. -- Deputies in Rockingham County are searching for a man who they say stole $50 and a single pack of cigarettes during an armed robbery.

Ryan Christopher Cox, 21, of 165 Steamboat Drive, is accused of robbing the Eagle Express on U.S. 220 in Madison on Sunday, April 22. 

During the robbery, deputies said Cox threatened the store clerk with a gun. He is considered "armed and dangerous," deputies said. 

No photo of Cox was available, but deputies described him as a white male standing 5'6" tall and weighing 260 lbs.  He has brown hair, brown eyes, and may have facial hair, deputies said.

Short Family Murder Remains Unsolved Nine Years Later

A 9-year-old girl and her Henry County family were murdered nine years ago Sunday and the crime remains unsolved.

Michael and Mary Short were found dead on Aug. 15, 2002, each with a single gunshot wound to the head.

The remains of the couple's 9-year-old daughter, Jennifer Short, were found six weeks later in Rockingham County, about 30 miles south of their home.

Jennifer also had a single gunshot wound in her head.

Police released its first sketch of the suspect in February 2010 and an updated sketch in March.

Several agencies came together to form a task force in 2005 to try to better handle the investigation, but without any luck.

Murder Case Still Unsolved Seven Years Later

Last Wednesday marked the seven-year anniversary of the unsolved murder of a Reidsville man, according to Godanriver.com.

Floyd Lee "Jim" Wilson, 64, was shot and killed after somebody forcefully entered the front door of his 226 Penny Lane home Aug. 3, 2004.

The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with any information to call (336) 634-3238.

Callers wishing to remain anonymous may call Rockingham County Crime Stoppers at (336) 349-9683 for a reward up to $1,000.

An additional reward being offered by his family members, the website reported.

Eden Police Officer Resigns After Inappropriate Sexual Relationship

An Eden police officer has resigned after it was revealed he had a sexual relationship with a female informant, according to Godanriver.com.

The relationship involved Detective Scott Carter and an unnamed female, the website reported.

It occurred in 2009, according to a letter written by Eden Chief of Police, Reece Pyrtle to Rockingham County District Attorney Phil Berger Jr.

The letter revealed that Carter resigned from his position June 13, according to the website.

Pyrtle wrote that the affair occurred away from the police department while Carter was off duty.

The woman was primarily used as an informant to buy controlled substances, the letter stated. She continued to work as an informant after the sexual contact.

"I apologize for the inappropriate actions on this occasion by a member of my department," Pyrtle said, in the letter. "This type of behavior and poor judgment will not be tolerated under my leadership."

Reidsville Church Door Damage, Suspect Sought

A side door at Smyrna Presbyterian Church in Reidsville has been damaged, according to the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said someone forced open the door between Monday and Tuesday. Nothing is currently reported stolen.

The door's damage is estimated at about $150. The church is located at 3350 NC Highway 65.

Man Charged With Stealing Video Games From Friend

About 25 video games were stolen from an Eden home on Rhodes Road, according to the Rockingham County Sheriff's Department.

Jerry Wayne Alford, 24, of Eden, was charged Wednesday with obtaining property by false pretense. Alford would allegedly steal video games from a friend after visiting the friend’s home.

He allegedly sold the games to a “Buy Sell Trade” store in Eden. Alford has a June 30 court date. No further details were provided.
